Job Description

Latino Film Institute (LFI) is seeking a Filmmaking Mentor to guide and inspire the next generation of storytellers through our education, training, and e-learning programs. Based in Los Angeles, CA, this role supports LFI’s mission to celebrate and advance Latino storytelling in film, television, and digital media by working directly with students, emerging filmmakers, and community partners in a collaborative, inclusive learning environment. As a Filmmaking Mentor, you will design and deliver hands-on instruction in the fundamentals of filmmaking, including story development, visual storytelling, directing, camera operation, sound recording, lighting, and basic editing. You will mentor students through the full production process—from concept and script through production and post-production—helping them complete short films, digital content, and portfolio-ready projects that reflect their unique voices and cultural experiences. You will model professional on-set practices and set clear expectations around collaboration, creative problem-solving, and respect for all roles within a production. You will facilitate small group workshops, one-on-one coaching sessions, and project-based learning activities, both in-person and through virtual or e-learning platforms. Working closely with LFI’s education team, you will help adapt curriculum for different age groups and skill levels, provide constructive, actionable feedback on works-in-progress, and support students in preparing for screenings, showcases, and festival submissions. You will encourage critical thinking around media representation, centering Latino heritage and underrepresented perspectives while fostering an inclusive space for all participants. In this role, you will also coordinate with program staff and guest speakers from the film and television industry to expose students to a range of career pathways, craft disciplines, and professional standards. You may assist with organizing student productions, securing locations and releases in collaboration with staff, managing equipment use and care, and maintaining a safe, respectful classroom and set environment that aligns with youth-serving nonprofit best practices. You will regularly track student progress, contribute to program evaluations, and share insights to help LFI strengthen and grow its educational initiatives. This position is ideal for a working or former filmmaker who is passionate about mentorship, education, and community impact. The successful candidate will bring practical production experience, strong communication skills, and a genuine commitment to empowering young and emerging Latino creatives. Prior teaching or mentoring experience is strongly preferred, as is comfort working in a mission-driven, collaborative nonprofit environment. Familiarity with Los Angeles film communities and Spanish/English bilingual skills are a plus. By joining LFI, you will contribute directly to programs that elevate Latino storytellers and expand access to film education. You will work alongside filmmakers, students, and industry partners to nurture talent, build confidence, and support pathways into film, television, and digital media careers. This role offers the opportunity to shape the creative journeys of emerging artists while helping to advance more authentic and equitable representation of Latino stories on screen.
